It was the night before Christmas…

When all through the fields
The shepherds were watching
Their sheep on the hills
The children of Bethlehem
Lay quietly still
Sleeping like the lambs
In the cool evening chill
And I with my shepherd’s staff
Nearly drifted off to sleep
As I shivered in the draft
While watching my sheep
When out on the hilltop
There arose such a stir
That I sprang from where I’d dropped
To see what had occurred
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a thousand angels singing
Halleluiah to God – so clear
They told us of the Christ child
Born that very night
Laying in a manger
Under the night sky so bright
And I heard an angel say
As they faded from sight
Peace on Earth and good will
To mankind tonight
With their voices still ringing
And not just a few!
I knew in a moment
The prophecy was true!
Astonished and excited
We went straight to the town
Not a window was lighted
As the manger we found
And there in the manger bed
The child slept with the lambs
On the hay where they fed
One like God, One like Man
As I fell to my knees
Tears welled up in my eyes
God had answered our pleas
And heard all our cries
God looked on us with favor
The promise to bring
God sent us a Savior
The Christ Child, the King
