A poem about an orphan coming of age.

~ The Darkness ~
The night was dark and quiet,
As she lay their in her bed.
Covered with a thin blanket.
No pillow for her head.
~
She’s been here in this orphanage,
For way to many years.
With nothing left from her past,
Except her painful tears.
~
On their way home from a party,
They had not driven that far.
Her parents were killed by a man,
Who was drunk and driving a car.
~
She had no family left,
So they put her in this home.
No one wants an older child.
She has nothing left to call her own.
~
She’ll finish high school in the spring.
Now she’s wondering what to do.
Soon she will be eighteen,
Her time here will be though.
~
Now she lays here in the darkness
With thoughts racing though her head.
What will life be like,
When she’s no longer here in this bed.
