Poem dedicated to those who died at Mittelwerk the underground rocket factory in Germany.(1943-45).In the accompaning photograph is Wernher Von Braun and some of the other scientists and technicians that fled to other countries after the war.

Mittelwerk was a factory under the ground,

claimed as the largest in the world,

where slaves toiled without a sound,

living deep down in the soil.

In the Harz mountains of Germany,

260 kilometres from Berlin,

huge galleries below the land,

at the base of a hill dug in…

In this huge underground factory,

from 1943 to 1945,

were built rockets to destroy,

causing many to die…

Below in these woven complex galleries,

thousands of concentrations inmates worked,

building the v1 and v2 rockets,

thousands died in their underground pockets…

These missiles were then transported,

to various sites and unmanned,

flew at other distant lands,

and on impact they exploded…

The Nazis hoped to develop,

a rocket to fly the Atlantic ocean,

to bomb New York was their notion,

no missiles ever got there…

Once the war had ended,

German scientist to other countries blended,

took with them their expertise,

put to good use in their new countries…

One such scientist Wernher Von Braun,

moved to the united states,

helped to develop the Saturn rocket,

to take man to the moon.

Today next to the former Mittelwerk factory,

A concentration monument stands,

a remembrances to those peoples history,

such cruelty is hard to understand…

Many of the inmates not only worked,

in cold damp and foreboding galleries,

but they lived slept and died here,

up to 20.000 perished there…

Visitors can take guided tours,

the cold galleries are still littered,

with rocket parts and more,

after all these years its still bitter…

The Mittelwerk missiles has a distinction,

the v1 and v2 rockets of destruction,

cost more lives in its production,

then for the purpose it was intended………..end

I was also shocked to hear about this, which was never mentioned in our history lessons. I can’t understand how even today companies can subject workers to all sorts of hazards with no safety measures, taking advantage of their ignorance or desperation to provide for their families that they will take any risk. I could understand it when no one knew about some of the dangers of the working conditions, but it is inexcusable in this time with the knowledge we have now. I feel sorry for those who put profit ahead of people on the day of judgment by the Supreme Judge.
