Having watched the final of the X- Factor, a british talent show, this week, I felt so sorry for the losers.

*

The acts would stand upon the stage,

Desire for fame being all the rage.

They’d sing out songs of yesteryear

And bring from us nostalgic tears.

Hope would fill each tender heart

As all their joy they would impart.

The urge to win beyond control,

So desperate are they to reach their goal.

But only one wins prize so grand,

And soon becomes much in demand.

The others must leave by stage door,

Their lives going on much as before.

Lovely poem. I really like how you relate the songs to yesterday and to feeling nostalgic and then bring the reader back to the present. This is really good work. Like in every pageant, there can only be one winner. I really like the ending and how you use the imagery of the stage door to lead the rest of the participants out.

  • Val Mills on Dec 16, 2010

I agree with love doctor above, the stage door seemed such a final exit, a closure on dreams. Once again, nice work Christine.

  • lapasan on Dec 16, 2010

    nice poem.

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Dec 16, 2010

A good observation but a good loser is one who never allows the failure to win to lock him or her out completely.

  • Poetic Enigma on Dec 16, 2010

Very great write, such a well composed piece! It’s hard to see such talented people lose, but only one can be the last one standing.

I often think the saying ”baring her / his soul” is well described for singers (especially) in competitions. They put so much feeling / emotion into a song to connect with the audience. It must be very hard to have to accept rejection when you have done this. Very well described Christine.

  • JoeLopy on Dec 16, 2010

    Excellent poem. I love it.

Your words describe this event so well.

  • Francois Hagnere on Dec 16, 2010

Very well said, as usual, Christine. Isn’t the most important to participate? all competitors have worked hard and only one winner seems unfair. Great poem again!

  • Betty Carew on Dec 16, 2010

Wonderful poem Christine. I sense the finality of the one that loses and it is sad but there can be only one that goes forward. Great poem love your work.

Your writing brings out the feelings of the singers so well.
    Excellent poem Christine.

You raise up wonderful points we all should think for.

  • Starpisces on Dec 16, 2010

    very good poem, well described.
Sometimes when watching all these competition, the losers crying away, I will think to myself “is it the end of the world?”. If I lose, I will be happy as I will be stress-free, but at the first place, why I wanted to participate yet enjoy losing? So, for me, it’s best not to take part to avoid all these stress and phobia.

  • lillyrose on Dec 16, 2010

Lovely share Christine but we know from experience that it is normally the runners up that do better than the winners. I was happy with the two finalists, I wanted either of them to win.

  • Sharif Ishnin on Dec 16, 2010

That’s the price of wanting fame. There’s only one winner and many losers.Very delicately and nicely written.

  • clay hurtubise on Dec 16, 2010

So you saw my performance, eh? :)
Often times, at least here in the US, the runner up gets as much attention.
    Fun piece.
    Thanks,

    A nice share buddy

  • LadyElena on Dec 16, 2010

Lovely Poem – I am half and half about it. Example, XFactor those who come 2nd 3rd 4th still go on to make good careers. Last year was interesting – Alexander Burke won, but the runners up JLS are doing so much better than her and are more popular than her. Having said that it must still be sad, not to be the winner. Nice share.

  • martie on Dec 16, 2010

In some cases, even the losers go on to bigger and better…at least that has been true with some of the talent shows here. But it is sad, to try so hard and not be appreciated.

  • Atanacio on Dec 16, 2010

a very good share once again

  • deedaG50 on Dec 16, 2010

Life is both about competition and about our attitude to winning or loosing. To make it a worthwhile journey we must learn to include fun and laughter in our travel kit, that way winning or loosing would not matter as much as being in the game. well written Christine.

  • nimbleful on Dec 16, 2010

I hope that the talented ones will find success whether they won the competition or not. It’ll make a good platform for them – a foot in the door at least – so all is not lost : )

  • Ruby Hawk on Dec 16, 2010

I notice that some losers are better than the winners and sometimes go further. But it has to be disappointing to lose. They start out so hopeful.

  • Eunice Tan on Dec 16, 2010

I think we should cheer up the losers.

  • Brewed Coffee on Dec 17, 2010

Fame is something that is much sought after. Some get it and some don’t. Those who succeed have their moments of glory but that too can be easily lost and another one gets the limelight. It’s a cycle.

  • papaleng on Dec 17, 2010

They are all winners in their own right. good post Christine.

Thank you once again for reading and commenting. I think most of you are right about the losers often doing better than the winners.

You always find poetry in everything (whether they’re beautiful, tragic, or even ordinary). That’s what sets you apart from the rest of us.

  • mark ramsay on Jan 2, 2011

I sometimes think the ones that don’t win do better. A good poem.

  • 1hopefulman on Jan 3, 2011

Excellent tribute! Many entrants, many losers and as you state there can only be one winner. To the winner go the spoils!

  • revivor on Jan 16, 2011

winning is not always about coming first…JLS, Lemar and probably Rebecca Ferguson!!

  • Erin Miller on Mar 3, 2011

I agree with shilaho jimmy on his comment. Definitely a great poem though. I think some of us desire fame in some way or another.
