In the tradition of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha – each line is composed of eight syllables.
Through sleepy eyes the girl peered hard
Into the dark expanse ‘round her.
Green fields now in eerie shadows;
Creatures of the night awakened;
And cooler winds started howling
To welcome the shroud of darkness.
“It won’t be long now,” the girl thought,
“Just a few steps and I’ll be there.”
With renewed vigor she went on
Trudging the darkened trodden path-
Each step higher than the previous;
And darkness grew deeper…deeper…
Yet nothing could bend her resolve
To reach the world of dreams above.
“Up to the sky I’ll go,” she said,
“Where the stars lie in wait for me,
And the moon dances in their midst.”
One step at a time, she clambered
Slowly, but steadily she scaled
The mountain in her fervent dreams.
Soon with triumph the girl set foot
On the mountaintop she dreamed about
Just as the moon was emerging
To reveal her silver beauty.
With a deep breath of sheer triumph,
She looked down to where she started;
Now flooded with radiant moonlight
And looked so very far away.
“I knew I could make it,” she yelled.
“I dreamed…I believed…I prevailed…
“I took up the challenge and won.”
Joyfully she sang while dancing
Under the vast blanket of stars;
Stretching her arms toward the sky,
Embracing the moment’s magic,
And delighting in her victory.
