This is my impression of John Wayne. He was one of my favorite cowboys.

The Duke was the last of the macho guys

He was tough as leather and tall as the sky

The best cowboy that ever did ride

And he cramped the rustlers style

Image via Wikipedia

He was the toughest hombre under the sun

They raised their hands when he drew his gun

If they didn’t want to die

There was never a woman he couldn’t tame

His words were soft and sweet

Unless the woman disagreed

Then he swept her off her feet

Image via Wikipedia

Those swinging hips, that crooked smile

Was every warm blooded womans delight

Not one can match that hombres style

since he sauntered into the western sky

My husband is a big fan of his. I enjoy watching him act beside Kate Hepburn. They offset each other well.

    Good job, Ruby

So cool, Ruby. You introduce me to the charisma of one man. I wasn’t born yet in his golden age.

I showed this to my hubby. He thinks he is John Waynes biggest fan. He loved it. I am not that big on the Duke, but that my be because my hubby thinks he has to watch everytime he is on TV.

Oh, Ruby, I loved the Duke. As a little girl I dreamed he would carry me away on his horse. I remember when he died. I was in nursing school and the group was having breakfast and reading the paper and someone said,” No! John Wayne died.” It broke my heart.

I thought everyone would know John Wayne or of him anyway. He was the greatest in his day. I grew up watching all his movies. My favorites were the ones he stared in with Mareen Ohara. I thought they were great together. \”The Quiet Man\” I have seen I don\’t know how many times. It wasn\’t a cowboy movie but still it was his own unique style that was so enjoyable. Thanks to you all for your interest. And good luck to you. Ruby

  • Annie Hintsala on Mar 12, 2009

While I am a fan of the westerns, my favorite John Wayne Picture was The Quiet Man. Great little tribute.

  • NA Staffieri on Mar 12, 2009

Great tribute to an icon of western cinema! Fitting for me that my favorite John Wayne movie is “The Shootist”, which was his last movie before he died. I am more of an Eastwood and Glen Ford western fan than the Duke, but that movie caught my attention to interest me more in the John Wayne westerns. Your poem does the man justice. Thanks, Ruby.
