A powerful earthquake shook the mountainous central Italy. By nightfall, the death toll stood at more than 150 people. Tens of thousands were homeless and at least 1,500 were injured in this earthquake which was the deadliest one in nearly thirty years. This is a poem I wrote describing how what I thought it would be like.
The earth suddenly rumbled.
With no warning the ground shook.
Rocks came tumbling down the steep, rocky mountains.
You could hear people terrified and screaming at the devastation,
Trying to find their families.
Buildings fell, houses crashed; the only road for escape was split in two.
The sway made it impossible to stand up.
But suddenly, it stopped.
There was a long silence before you could hear people crying and babies bawling.
Everything was completely destroyed.
There was nothing you could look at that had any resemblance of what it was before.
Many people lost their homes and loved ones
In the aftermath of the severe earthquake.
The plethora of deaths is still rising.
