This poem is from a series I’ve recently begun. It’s a collaboration between myself and my close friend Elliot. The process of the making of the poem is that I take a poem that Elliot had previously written, and then I add my own words in between his. Elliot’s writing is the normal text while mine is the text inside the parentheses.
it’s only when i’m faintest that i glow
(but when i’m alive there’s no light to show)
the quiet city, old grey light
(the happy farm town, content with darkness)
i’m half the man i used to be
(and a quarter of what i wanted to be)
the man i hoped i ever was
(got lost and lacks any color)
and i thought of you
(as i always do)
when reflected in the shade of morning
(we sat in a field, watching the pink of the sky)
a quiet glimmer, new dawn light
(shining gently, and i noticed)
your eyes were bright, not dead like mine
(and it brought me hope)
but our hearts ached for what we never
could quite grasp
(though we tried for so long)
teasing words in silent space
(we were blind at first but regained our sight)
eyes flicker in the night
loving fantasies of common place
assumption (,inquiries)
together in trust, (but separated by white lies)
well time will tell if nothing stays
(the same, always the same, or)
if right will turn wrong
(and if left will become the new path)
if shelter turns storm
(and deprives us of that familiar comfort)
and tomorrow seems so far away to clouds of grey
but so does today
(and no doubt tomorrow as well)
it’s such a fleeting little chance
(that we will ever grasp that certain thought)
who am i and who are you?
(who was i and who were you?)
will my tears turn you away?
(will the stains on my cheeks bring you back?)
will these trials make you stay?
(will the resolutions lack?)
we’ll never know
(but we’ll always try)
can’t say for sure, can never say
(especially with where we are today)
if you will dream of me and i
will stay the man you loved
(you will be a sleeping beauty)
but turned restless in the night
