The End of a Dream

I awoke one morning in the midst of life
Contented and sure in the love of my wife
I loved her more with the passing days
With her beauty, grace and pleasant ways.

She’d grown more lovely as the years went by
And still she caused my heart to fly
I thought in my heart on that fateful day
That our life together would end this way.

I still hear the words that broke my heart
“I love you, as a brother, now we must part.”
She wept as she said these words to me,
“My life has changed. I want to be free.”

We were closer then than we’d been before
Both of us shattered, hearts on the floor.
My life, like my heart, was full of grief
The feeling of emptiness beyond belief.

I talked for hours, fighting for life
As I tried to know how I’d lost my wife
We wept as we talked, but it wasn’t to be
I saw through the tears, she’d gone from me.

I appealed to her head, and to her heart
But still she insisted, we had to part
As so, in the end, I had to leave.
Alone.  Again. I began to grieve…
