Story of a family’s immigration to the U.S. and the events following.
A life of cruelty
A whirlpool
Opportunity
A new life
A new land
Disguised as a calm river
It seemed so happy, so good
But the moment they arrived in the new land,
Went around the bend,
Is when it started
When he would come home,
He would yell at her
Curse her, beat her
But she was a wall, she could take anything
Each night, it would continue worsening
Like a balloon:
Growing
Expanding
Ready to burst
But it didn’t
When she realized, it was too late
She was near the center
She didn’t know how to swim
And that night it was worse,
He came home drunk,
More drunk than usual
When she tried to talk to him
To get him to change
He beat her
Like a hurricane striking a house
And didn’t stop until it was decimated
Then, she did the only thing she knew,
She picked me up
And ran
