Mama had six children and we always celebrated the holidays at her house. We all brought food and feasted until we couldn’t hold anymore. We visited with all the new brides and grooms and passed all the new babies around. We commented on how much all the kids had grown, and talked the day away until time to head back home in the evening.

Mama’s house is in the valley
All the family comes to call
especially on the holidays
We bring good food for all
Mama bakes her special plum cake
cooks the dressing in the pan
How good are Betty’s pecan pies
and Jeans sweet candied yams.

We brag on Darlene’s Boston beans
and Jimmie’s lemon cream
Charlotte’s six week pickled slaw
and Angela’s chicken wings
The youngest babes are passed around
for everyone to see
then we all discuss the newest moms to be.

We say how beautiful the brides
how handsome are the grooms
remark on how the kids have grown
like jimpson weed in June
but now the sun is sinking low
We pack our pots and pans
and gather round to say good-bye
until the next holiday arrives.
