A piece about Domestic Violence.

  • The rain fell hard that day

So many tears had been shed so much pain

They all gather and begin to speak

I remember how her smile made me weak

I remember how she always waved as we walked by

The happiness in her face we could not buy

    But then everything changed

The moment she met what’s his name

He kept her hidden away from us

As if it was us he didn’t thrust

Then when she came to the light

Her face was bruised like she had a fight

When asked she said I’m so clumsy

But we knew better when he was around she was very jumpy

However we were not in the business of others

The things he did made us shudder

But after all this time love had found her lonely heart

Who were we to tear them apart

Then that faithful day of knowledge came crashing down

As her lifeless body was soon found

In a bloody mess she was now laying

Nothing could have helped her not even praying

So now over her grave we neighbors stand

Her life ended with the raise of a hand

Now we realized our voices could have save this innocent life

But because of our fear her last scream was not heard that night

Poor lady, we need to do all we can to make sure others don’t end up this way.

My wife is an advocate for people with disabilities. She sees many situations in which defenseless people are physically, sexually or financially abused. She struggles often with trying to find the balance between letting someone command their own life and intervening when you feel they have lost control of the situation. You cannot always get it right.
