The first Inuits live in a rather harsh environment with an abundance of wildlife.

Inuits live in a frozen region

Where the temperature

Dips to -30 degrees Fahrenheit

In January

The sun sets in March

And doesn’t rise

For five months later

- – -

This harsh environment

In the Artic is  rich with wildlife

Like caribou, musk oxen, birds, seals,

Whales, walruses

And an abundance

Of fishes in lakes and rivers

- – -

The Inuits call the Artic home

Are mammal hunters

Eating mainly caribou meat

Using its oil for lamps

And making clothing

From its skin

- – -

Most of their weapons

And tools were made

From caribou bones

And other animals

Other useful body parts

Are an animal’s teeth, ivory

Sinews and intestinal tissues

- – -

Inuits make their boats

From seal skins

Live in igloos

Where they constantly

Talk and dream

About the caribou

I got a chill just looking at that picture. It’s hard to believe that anything can live in all that snow and ice, let alone a person.

They deserve to be admired for living in such extreme conditions!
