A poem that with pictures would make a great children’s poetry book. It is a story about the undeniable friendship between and unlikely pair.
A fox and a Sheep stood on the hill
They were sitting very, very still
Unlikely friends, though both should be foes
Unlikely events that helped them both grow
It was many years ago when they but kids
The sheep, but a lamb was lost out at the fields
He waited and waited and didn’t quite know
That his mother had gone out to the farm deep below
The little fox heard the lamb’s long, long cry
And came down to help him, bye and bye
“Why are you crying, what is very wrong?”
He asked, friendly.” Why are you sad all day long?
“I lost my mother.” he baaed. “I am nothing but scared.
“In this thick forest, I have no clue how I am going to fare.”
The fox thought about it, as sly as foxes do
“Come on then, and I will help you.”
So the fox led the lamb down the hill, down and down
He led the little thing through the small farm town
They went over hill and over here and there
Finally, the fox led the lamb home with great care.
The lamb was so grateful, he did nothing but smile
“Thank you so much for helping me and taking the time.”
The fox stood stoic, and gave a silent nod
“One day, when I need help, you will come, no matter how odd.”
Many years later, they had grown and changed
the fox and lamb were now grown but their friendship had remained
They had never seen each other since that very day
But the lamb, now a sheep, had kept his word just the same way
The fox got too close to the field and ended up down the hill
He had hoped no one would see him, and had kept very still
But it was too late, for he fell in a hunter’s trap
The hard steel went over his back leg with a cold snap
In shock and in fear, he cried and whelped
He stared around frantically for some kind of help
But there was no help, and it never came
The fox began to give up all the same
When out to his left, he saw that grown up sheep
Whom had been herding cows down a hill that was very steep
When he came across the gully where the poor fox did lie
he stared at his poor face and wanted to simply cry
“I will help you and save your life as you did mine”
“No matter what, it will be just fine”
So he looked at the trap, and looked for the small latch
And thought for a way to hold back the hatch
Suddenly to the side, the sheep saw a big, long stick
he picked it up and put it in the trap with a big flick
The trap immediately let loose, the fox was free to go
He realized he owed his life to the sheep he helped a long time ago
“You saved me, my dear friend.”
“No matter what, I will make sure our species can live together, ” he said
“We have hunted you for a long time, and could never get along”
“This just shows that not trusting one another was very wrong.”
So now the two sat on the same hill they had sat a long time ago
They looked out far and wide and the world far below
They both had a new future and a new difference to make
They had saved each other, and no lives did they take
