This is one of my favorite works– in retrospect it is about all the different ways I’ve tried to fill the space between myself an others. It is about the confusion trying to be different ways for different people creates in the self over time.

A gap does lie,

Behind my eyes,

A place I leave unfilled,

All things I feel,

Are edited,

Projected through this field,

Pain to pleasure,

Pleasure’s pain,

All rearranged to yield,

Responses safe,

Prospective fates,

Seem cause for such a shield,

A monster lies,

Behind my eyes,

He has the will to kill,

He compromises,

All I’ve grown to love,

And wish to build,

His every act,

Is one of hate,

Hi every thought so shrill,

He has no faith,

The human race,

Physically makes him ill,

A child lies,

Behind my eyes,

He cries because it hurts,

He doesn’t understand,

Why all our plans,

Just never worked,

He wants to save,

Them from themselves,

He wants to know self-worth,

But loses faith,

A warm embrace,

Would shake him from his perch,

A preacher lies,

Behind my eyes,

And he knows right from wrong,

He shows the way,

Discriminates,

White from black alone,

Since long before,

He was of age,

He counseled those and cared,

He hides behind,

His heart and faith,

His soul is in despair.

A fantasy,

I live in now,

Where peace is had and won,

These facets fade,

My every trait,

Dissipates at once,

The emptiness,

Is hard to bear,

But better than the war,

The monster,

Child, and preacher,

Fight to fill the gap I store.
