I wondered why this light wasn’t working….

In time of yore,
Days long gone by
Streets were lit
By gas light.

Gas piped in
To open flame
Cities often burned
By gas light.

Time passed
Incandescent bulb
Bade good-bye
To Gas light.

I bought a house
With a back-yard light
Which didn’t work
To hurl back the night

I examined it’s
Broken shards
Is that a mantel
And a gas vent?

And there
Blazoned on the post
For all to see:
It’s A GAS LIGHT!

Even in India the gas lights have gone into oblivion. There is a proverb, ‘new rupee drives the old rupee’.The same is the case with the gas lights. Thanks to the genius called Edison !!

I remember once going to Glasgow, a Scottish city. I arrived in the early hours of the morning to see the lamp lighter snuffing out the gas lights in the streets. This piece has really brought back memories. A lovely write.

I love to collect old oil lamps and it is a delight to see that you have a gas light. They are rather easy to fix, only prob is that if you are inside city limits, they may not let you light it.

    Enjoyed this muches

Such a nostalgic article! :) I love gas lamps, oil lamps, candles, and everything inbetween! :) The older, the better! ^-^
