During my years of teaching I took my class each year to this wonderful castle after re enacting the Battle of Hastings at nearby Battle Abbey. It was always the highlight of the year.

High on the cliffs surveying all

Through battle scars and broken walls,

Where William came to rule our land

And view the sea beyond the sand,

Stands Hastings Castle, such a sight

Eerily lit on storm filled night,

And calling to all ships at sea

Like a ghostly galleon roaming free.

*

Will was crowned on Christmas Day

And ordered forts without delay

Built from stone on hallowed ground

This castle seen from miles around.

As years passed with gales and storms

The sandstone cliffs were soon transformed,

And battlements fell from towering height

The ocean claiming stolen rights.

*

Then war years passed and bombs destroyed

Remaining walls to leave a void.

The abandoned fort and town so poor

Had lost most of its old grandeur.

And now our children come to learn

To show what happened is their concern.

They study the history so they will know

Of this castle built so long ago.

Wonderful! You brought the picture to life. You have such great – old – history. Castles and kings. Our history consists of old forts, Indians and RCMP, homesteaders and trappers. It’s wonderful too – just not as old.

Using poetry to review the history of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 gives it some of the sentiments and dignity it deserves, and also gives us a nice step back in in time. Thanks for the share.
