Written after Houdini the hamster escaped for the umpteenth time.
What a palaver and what a to-do,
the hamster’s escaped and we don’t know
where to!
We’ve looked in the cupboards, and under
the bed,
We’ve searched in the garden, and inside
the shed.
He’s been missing for hours, he’s a right
little pest,
I can picture him now quietly building
a nest.
I’ve put dishes of tidbits all over the floors
and I’ve made sure that Tiddles is kept
out of doors.
We’ve abandoned the search, “cos it”s late
and we’re tired,
and I’d not be surprised if the poor thing’s
expired.
We’ll discover him hidden at some later
date,
stuck under the floorboards, or wedged
in the grate.
Hey! I just heard a noise, was it hamster
or mouse?
Why the crafty wee thing has crept back
to his house.
He’s sitting there quietly, as if to say,
‘I’m surprised that you noticed that I’d been
away.’
