Don’t ever let anyone make you feel like they are better you. For all the people who have study and received degrees, kudos. But some don’t deserve kudos.

There is nothing in this world

that I wouldn’t do.

To separate myself, from

the ignorance of the few.

The ones that are always

willing to teach,

but have made a declaration

that they can’t be taught.

They study with the masters,

but don’t truly know the sport.

A degree is a piece of paper,

earned from various years of study,

and even with this document,

some are broke and have no money.

The meek will inherit the earth.

and no amount of intellect,

entitles you to an upper berth.

Good one. Sometimes just good old common sense can be mistaken for wisdom. They don’t teach that in college.

I respect your point of view and you are right nobody has the right to make you feel inferior just because they hold a degree. But I am going to share something with you. I don’t agree with you that a degree is only a piece of paper. I have both an undergraduate and graduate degree in Journalism and can honestly say that I have studied very hard to earn it. Through sacrifice, hard work, commitment and perseverance, I have made it to where I am today. I thank my parents a lot too. A lot of jobs require that you have either a degree or at least a vocational degree plus the work experience. You didn’t mention the vast amount of knowledge a person does acquire after graduating from a four year accredited university. And yes, I also agree with you. the job market is hard enough as it is. Those people who have made it without a college education have been lucky or they have run into the right people who wanted to help them. For instance, I know lots of people who started working for attorneys since they were 17 or 18 years old, learned the business and worked their way up. With the job market the way it is, there are a lot of people without jobs and usually when you do graduate somebody has to give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door. Been there and done that. People will turn you down, but you have to keep working hard. So in my case, I earned my degree and now I am going for my law degree.

I have four associate degrees, dont flaunt or float them, use them to maneuvre around more easily in my career field. Some times a degree is nec to get the appropriate credentials nec to keep working. Have learned a lot from all here on Triond and am itching to learn more and more and more.
    Good article

You are quite right. It seems to me a degree doesn’t get you anywhere these days. So many graduates remain unemployed or working in jobs with no prospects. I don’t have a degree but have taught for more than forty years. I certainly don’t consider myself better than anyone else, far from it in fact. I have always had low esteem, but I know there are those who think they know it all. A great poem.

I think this poem was taken out of context, It wasn\’t meant to insult people with degrees, I know they work very hard for them, but the people that take their degrees and step all over the little people. In the sense that It\’s just a piece of paper, which mean just that it\’s paper, now the words on the paper mean a lot. I started out explaining that those that have a degree kudos. But some don\’t deserve the kudos because they use their degree as a weapon, to taunt the little people. I admire intelligence, and try only to be around people that want to forge ahead. I sorry to those that got offended.

I personally have a degree. But, I have found that some with degrees (at least in my field) have theoretical knowledge and no idea how to apply it. As my mother would say, they have book sense and no common sense. In those cases the degrees aren’t even worth the paper they are printed on.

There are also those who spend their lives in academia; years and years of independent study, research, and theses and have no idea how to interact with people.

When I read this first, I had a sad face and was telling myself- I am not bad and don’t flaunt it. I think getting a degree takes a lot of hard work. But I do agree that people should respect others-degree or no degree.I am glad I read your comment Diamond. :)
