Have you ever passed a homeless man or woman on the street standing in the
rain with a cold chill in the air. Some Christians would say it’s just another way that God tests us. What say you?

THE HOMELESS MAN

i passed one who slipped

through the town’s safety net

he was there in the drizzle

soaking and wet

as my brother’s keeper

i felt guilty and cold

i feared god had turned

his back on my soul

i ignored christian kindness

and felt such deep shame

for in god’s love no brother

is left in the rain

I love the last line. \”In God\’s love, no brother is left in the rain.\” We should all feel guilty for the way society ignores the needs of the homeless. Wonderful poem.

Very deep and penetrating piece, Louis. As human beings we are capable of great compassion so the site of another fallen brother or sister at times does fill my heart with shame and great sadness. To have so much while others have so little and suffer so, is heartbreaking at times.

This is a deep poem; sometimes it is hard to balance charity with safety, and compassion with common sense. When you stop feeling guilt, your callousness is complete.

    Maranatha,
You have more depth in your critiques than I do in my verse.

important subject to call attention to – most of just walk by and try to pretend the homesless aren’t there – when I started photographing people lately instead of just nature, I came across some wonderful people with shopping carts full of their possessions and some wore genuine smiles and had great spirit.

Recently I saw a homeless man standing with his cardboard sign on the sidewalk outside a church. People scurried past him into the building without giving him a second thought. I watched him from across the street for several minutes before I, too, left. I think of that scene often and wonder how one should respond.
