A review I wrote after viewing the play “The importance of being Earnest” written by Oscar Wilde.
The importance of being Earnest
The play was divided into 2 major parts, with in between a pause. Based on time, those 2 parts were balanced. However based on the content the second part was way better and funnier than the first. The first part didn’t manage to interest me a lot, but the second part made up for it.
There are relations to the original play, for example the language used by the actors. These were still the same lines as written by Oscar Wilde. But the TNT Theatre Britain added a lot of humour in the play, for example the muffin spit in the audience. This was a very good adaptation, as it managed to interest the audience.
The actors did a splendid performance and I have no remarks on their job. The understandability wasn’t always that good, however the actors are not to blame for it, the use of old English is.
The play started of in a seat, later on it was transformed into a fence and some rocks. In addition the carpet was turned over and transformed into a grass field.
There were several props involved in the play, for example the umbrella of Cecily, a cucumber, muffins,… They all had their role in the play.
The costumes were linked to the original time, which complied with the original language.
My overall conclusion of the play is that it was a funny play, despite the original language. Another remark is that the 2 major parts weren’t balanced and the play started off quite dull. However the final part contained a lot of humour and therefore the play was successful.
