A political sonnet: elections 2008 and 2010.
In Lear, he wore a funny hat and told
the king the things in riddle others dared
not say–a noble right to hear the bold,
mocking truth. Now the regal sins are bared
by late night comedian goofing stars,
gods of this degenerate age, demogogues,
elected shaggy donkeys bound by Tzars
who roped their supine necks in joyous fog
of party din: popcorn, confetti, clown
noses litter the trampled circus ground
post win, 2008. They placed a crown
on Obama’s head, heaped a burial mound:
Hope and Change danced a jig over bones of foes–
cut short the song–the people’s wrath arose.
