It was a small ordinary jewelry box,
red velvet protected its contents well.
Its brass handles were polished weekly,
four drawers held its treasures safely.
****
But it was the content of it that counted,
for they represented four generations.
From Angela to her great grandmother,
each has a piece of history in her box.
****
Angela’s wedding ring sits in the box,
its multiple diamonds still has a sparkle.
Someday she will give it to her daughter,
who in turn will pass to her grandchild.
****
A thick silver chain lies in a drawer also,
its tiny emeralds resembling falling stars.
Her father gave to her mother years ago,
a sign of devotion for the wife he loved.
****
Six strands of beads are carefully packed,
for they were her grandmothers favorite.
Grandma wore them to church faithfully,
a present from a long dead grandfather.
****
Great grandmother was a Russian countess,
the left jewels are too valuable to be at home.
So great grandmas sits safe in the bank now,
But one tiny ivory cameo sits in it drawer.
****
Angela has pictures galore to show though,
some are in frames that are centuries old.
But you have to be family to see the jewelry,
the items to her are more precious then gold.
