The fair has arrived in our town and the sight of it brought back lots of memories of the pleasures it gave us as children when the fair made it’s annual visit to our town.

The fairground has appeared once more
In windswept fields beneath the sun.
And as I watched my childhood flashed
Of long gone rides and endless fun.
*
How we loved to spend an afternoon
On the big wheel towering up above,
And clambering into dodgem cars
To crash with zeal into ones we loved.
*
The goldfish trapped in tiny bags
Awaited fate as balls were tossed
At coconuts stuck down on stands,
Which meant great hopes were often lost.
*
And the carousel where children rode
And organ music blared out loud,
Bright painted horses galloped by
Drawing curious eyes out from the crowd.
*
In the distance a ghost train called
To those whose hearts beat loud with fear.
Bony skeletons and haunted faces
Would bring forth shrieks and oft a tear.
*
Stalls where tempting treats were spread
And candy floss wound on a stick
Would soon attract the revellers
Causing many of them their lips to lick
*
The octopus, waltzer and astra glides
Brought glorious fun to all who rode
Now these pleasures from so long ago
Are once again on us bestowed.
