About this experiment that has taken
More than our lifetime to nurture?
Punch by barter in a honourable gathering?
Mudslinging?
Stealing in the confines of high places
With the flowing garb
Barely able to conceal the spill?
Official debauchery?
Inflated contracts and bloated egos?
Overnight and unsweated-for-wealth?
Corruption buy-back?
Short-tempered impeachments without provocation?
Divide and rule?
Assassinations and unnecessary death threats?
Sit-tight and incumbency syndrome?
Bomb blasts?
Always calling in the bayonet
To intervene in trivial matters better settled
In the warm intimacy of the conference hall?
And the wig-mace conspiracy?
What have we learnt:
Dancing around in a circle
As we always devise means to stick to power?
The kettle and the pot
Trading compliments in a fair contest
Postponing, as it were, the doomsday.
