New growth on the tiny lemon tree in our garden.

We planted a tiny lemon tree

and hoped fruit it would bear;

But in three years it’s been there

it’s had so little to share.

There were a couple of lemons

but other than that excitement

growth has been very slow.

Until the other day that is,

after days of autumn sun

I noticed new growth in the garden,

and outside I did run.

That tiny lemon tree of ours

has finally shot away

with new leaves now exhibited

as if it’s there to stay.

Last week we said we’d chop it

from it’s little corner space,

it must have heard our mutterings

and felt a small disgrace.

So now the leaves are flourishing,

lets hope the lemons do so too,

that lemon tree can stay awhile

to see what it can do.

It takes some trees a few years to get established, but once they do look out! You may soon have more lemons than you know what to do with. I have an orange tree in my house I am patiently waiting on. I cannot plant it outside as it wouldn’t survive the winter. I may put it in my greenhouse this summer (hope to get one built) and see how it grows. Great poem!

Hopefully the little lemon tree will surprise you this year. Great post.

I enjoyed your poem Val, hope you have a bumper crop.

Yes I agree with the first comment the trees take on average 4 years to establish a root structure and flowers and buds start. Our lemon tree replaced one that died and it took ages to bring the soil to a good standard. I had advise from some people on the tree too.

So you are saying the lemon tree just needed encouragement to start to progress? LOL Great poem and hears wishing you plenty of lemon aid.

  • PR Mace on Mar 16, 2011

I say let the poor tree grow awhile longer and you may be some lemonaid.

According to my dad who has a greenthumb,it helps to talk to trees or plants for them to bloom,I don’t actually know if it is true but our plants are all well-bloomed because that is what my dad is doing. I guess from what you’ve said in your poem,it only proves that it’s true, lol! Great poem!

How nice, to have a garden to plant trees.
I only have some potted plants.
    Well composed poem as usual.

Like a naughty kid being threatened with stoppage of allowances! Lemons are great for all sorts of things, lemon drizzle cake, lemonade, lemon chicken, drizzled onto pancakes, etc, so let’s hope it grows strongly, and bears much fruit.

Awww I’ve got one that I’ve brought inside for the UK winter… we get lots of flowers but no fruit. It’s pining for the sun I think hee hee

Lemons are alien to our place, we only have what we call calamansi, a itrus family too. Well, I enjoyed reading your poem.

A very cute piece, Val. My Mum has a couple of little lemon trees in Italy and they are always full of fruit when I visit.
