E.D.? could stand for just about anything.
sometimes "we" get caught up in our ideals that, "we" can't see the 'forest for the trees' or in the case of your little rabbit, he had so many choices, he couldn't make up his mind. And because he didn't wish to "hurt anyone's feelings" everyone else was producing where he was not.
And because he "knew what he liked," the one that could have been his forever, he probably thought of her as a "kid sister"
At least, that's my interpretation. Right, Wrong or no where near the center.
