This is a free verse poem about God making the world. It is based off of Genesis 1-3.
The Maker
Long before our time
Before the world was new
there was a man, no a maker, a god
who wanted friends just like you
So through the fiery darkness
He said but four simple words
“let there be light”
then the sky was set ablaze
The light was day
and the darkness night
all was good
said the maker
Water was the next basic need
He separated the land from the sea
and gave us some good drinking water
now there’s sky, land and ocean
Trees and Plants
all kind of vegetation
was the next thing we needed
then all is good said the Maker
Pure darkness was no good thought the Maker
so he put the moon and the stars in the sky
and scattered them all around
To guide us
The silence in the sky and the sea
was broken – broken
when he put the birds in the sky
and fish in the sea
Scurry and run the Maker spoke
putting the land mammals all around
the world was now a lively place
and all was good laughed the Maker
Still this Maker did not have a friend
to whom he could talk and laugh with
He molded a human out of the clay
an image of himself
With a breath of life the man came alive
Adam was his name
He was put in charge of all the animals
of land and sea and sky
All of this happened in a mere six days
and so on the seventh the Maker rested
he took a break from his “tolling” work
and blessed that day there on after
There was no rain or anything evil
The world was a perfect place
There were many trees and many fruits
that the man could pick from
But there was one tree the Maker put there
to push men into temptation
It was the tree of knowledge of good and evil
that Adam was not allowed to pick from
The Maker decided that one wasn’t enough
loneliness isn’t right
so he created a partner
for Adam
While Adam was sleeping
the Maker took
naught but a little bone
no help make a woman
Adam was happy as could be
when he saw his partner
Eve and Adam, Adam and Eve
they were named man and wife
Then the serpent came along
the most cunning of all animals
It spoke lies and tried to turn
Eve away from the Maker
With his serpent tongue he spoke those lies
into the humans hearts
they had a struggle within themselves
but ended up taking the fruit
Now they were shamed
and afraid to face their Maker
when he walked among them they hid in fright
with very lame excuses
The Maker was not a foolish God
for he knew all about them
He cursed the serpent to the ground
bound there for eternity
Then he punished the man and his wife
they were to work the soil
There would be pain and suffering
no matter where they went
They worked the land and
had many kids
they lived on for many years
before they joined their Maker
