This is a poem about a misunderstood person, a mime in this case. The mime tried to make people happy, but no one would take him seriously. They scorned him out of the village. When he stumbled on a band of robbers and overheard them talking about raiding the little village, he went back to warn the people. This poem is about how they reacted to the news.

Once upon a time,
there was a mime,
who travelled from city to city,
and very poor was he,
but received he no pity.

“who is he?”
the town people would say,
and laughed with loud laughter gay.
“you mean the one who never speaks?”
“and gives the kiddies treats?”

Then other town people would asnwer,
” ’tis he i swear!”
“that old bafoon!”
“who carries his rainbow balloon!”

The poor old mime,
who travelled all the time,
was quite aware of their mocking,
but he paid no heed,
for he was sturdy as a steed,
even if his ship seemed a ‘rocking.

Then one day,
the mime was out a’walking,
it was near midday,
when he over heard them a’talking,
“We will steal and take from them all!”
“And there will be gold for us all!”

A band of scraggly men were there,
and the mime could swear,
that they planned to raid that town over there!

He ran to the town as fast as he could,
so thick was the fog,
that he tripped over a log,
he pushed his legs forward as fast as they would.

to the town he made it,
and the towns people saw his distress,
and gathered togetherto see about it,
for they saw the mud on his dress.

He jumped and pointed,
and grabbed and bolted,
he ran around,
and the ground he joilted.

He stopped and there was silence in the mist,
“he had gone mad!” they laughed.
the town people jeered, drawing near,
“lets do away with him now while he is in our midst!”

The mime tried and tried,
to tell them of the danger,
but they instead dragged and tied,
the old mine from a branch to dangle.

and as he hung there dying,
he looked up and saw the band of raiders coming,
and he began crying,
for the children he loved,
never again to their homes would be coming.
because the town people had no love.
