This is a poem I wrote after my career in the military crumbled due to economic downturn. I wanted to know, “did I succeed or not?”

Life is a menu of compromise
For some much, an for some, few;
How much depends on who you are
And what you live up to.
If you’re a lowlands man-
With a highlands dream
And you’ve spent your time safely down
But you’ve spent your time helping others climb up
You’ve compromised little in town.
If you’re a highland’s man-
With a lowlands dream
But you’ve spent your time in the hills
You’ve spent your time rescuing those gone too high
You’ve compromised little up there.
But highlands men with highlands dreams
Or lowlands men with lowlands,
Who’ve spent their time on themselves alone
Not raising the weak or protecting the poor
Have compromised all that there is.
You succeed if you look in the mirror
And admit, though your dream is by
“I did what was needed
Though I lost my dream-
I can still look myself in the eye.”
