My thoughts after going to a professional basketball game the other night and experiencing what is described in the poem. And marveling at the depth of peoples hate and ignorance. And fearing it!

Why do you think that the skin you are in

makes you better than everyone else?

You come out in public, surrounded by all hues,

and talk crap about people with skin different than yours.

It’s obvious, after listening to you,

that your skin did not make you smarter!

You sit and offend every person around

with your foul mouth and hate filled trash talk.

Children were sitting right in front of you,

but that didn’t stop the mess spewing from you.

Even they, with skin the same color as yours,

were upset and angered by your words.

To stupid to even notice or care,

you still kept talking on into the night.

Why were you at a sporting event where the players,

those graceful athletes, most had skin the color you hate?

Why come to a place to only jeer, not cheer,

and anger the true fans that surrounded you?

Three ignorant, scared, little bigots;

all trash talking, hate spewing fools.

I wondered as we fans left that night,

people of every color together;

“How do you live in the world of today?”

So many beautiful people of every culture and color

make our world a delightful place for every sense:

taste, sight, smell, touch and sound.

Do you hide away and avoid everyone who isn’t just like you?

Eat only white bread, white rice, drink white milk?

Sounds crazy, I know, but so does your hate,

you poor wretched, ignorant souls.

Perhaps, someday, a miracle will happen

and your eyes and heart will open.

You will be able to see that underneath our skins

we are all humans, with the same hopes and dreams as yours.

But until that day, my wish is that I don’t ever

have to listen to anymore of your foolish, hate filled words.

Stay away in your little hate filled world.

Please don’t come and contaminate ours.

Great write! We are all one and skin color means nothing to the wise.

Deep moral message in your writing. I agree with you. We are all equal.

Peg, this is beautifully expressed! There are people whose hearts are filled with hate and prejudice based on skin color, religion, etc. We need works such as yours to help show them how foolish and wrong their hatred is. Nicely done!

Excellent piece. It\’s amazing how some people have a backward way of thinking.

Well said. There are ignorant people everywhere but, we seem to have more than our share in America. We were all created equal, and skin color has no effect on that equality. But some narrow minded individuals seem to think so. Hopefully they are few and far between. Nice piece.

This was clearly an upsetting experience for you. I sympathize with your despair. This subject always seems to bring me back to this Star Trek episode I first watched as a child. The last surviving members of two races living on the same planet were engaged in this eternal struggle. Their only difference was that one race was black on the right side, white on the left…and the other race’s colors were opposite.
This made me realize that the human condition is such that, regardless of all we might have in common, there’s this need deep within us to draw imaginary lines between us. So sad. So very sad.

This was awesome, I think it’s sad that people can be so prejudice toward one another. I mean it’s not even one race against each other but even against themselves because of who they choose to hang with. Great work.
