Duff writing challenge #10.

My daddy always told me

Son don’t mess around

With your cousins up the holler

In our little mountain town

You must marry outside the “family”

Because a cousin’s “love is forbidden”

Mountain folk are considered dumb

For keeping our family secrets hidden

Your mama is also your second cousin

I’m ashamed to tell you this

It started one Saturday on a hayride

When she gave me that big long kiss

Twenty years and seventeen kids later

Your mom and me is all tuckered out

We never thought about the consequences

But now we have some doubt

You’ve been seen with your cousin Pearl

Way up yonder on Briar’s mountain

I know you weren’t picking blackberries

Ya’ll was seen kissing at lover’s fountain

So son, please take heed to my warning

Marry a “little gal” from out of town

Your kids will grow up strong and healthy

And you’ll be “choppin” that family tree down!

That was a good one! I wasn’t reading out loud but I found myself using another voice in my head to go with some of the words like way up yonder and little gal.

The Kentuckian and his honey were smoochin up a storm in the front seat of Bubba’s Camaro when she breathlessly asked, “Wanna go in the back seat?”
    “Nope”, said Bubba.
After a few more minutes of heavier petting, she asked, “Now do you wanna go in the back seat?”
“Naw”, Bubba replied, “Ah jess wanna stay up here with you.”

Hah – this reminded me of the Simpsons. As the legend tells, pioneers went to settle Springfield, but there was disagreement with the pioneers. One lot wanted to live a good life, while the other wanted to be free to marry their cousins – after all, their cousins were all very attractive.

Nice one dude. Good fun. Thanks for playing
