A poem inspired by Salvador Dali’s painting, The Persistence of Memory.
6:00 PM.
He is awoken by a buzz and he looks down
As a fly scatters away from his watch.
The sun begins to fall towards the ground and
He tracks its progress. Moving ever so slowly.
6:15 PM.
The ground, the sea, the sky, the cliffs
The longer he waits, the more they seem as one,
The more his eyes begin to droop.
As the sun’s tender warmth disappears
6:30 PM.
The streetlights flicker on and cast a lonely shadow
Over his bench and the misplaced watch
Overrun by ants that lies by the lone tree.
Both lost in the world as much him.
6:45 PM.
He loses hope that someone is coming.
It is visible in his face. He stands up to leave but
Looks around just to check if it’s true.
The moment of realization has come.
6:55 PM.
