I had the occasion to meet with several members of The Red Hat Society for a function a while back. I was so impressed with the organization that I decided to research how they got started. After doing so, I wrote a poem and sent to them with the hope they would print it in one of their news letters. Unfortunately, that did not happen. And so, I decided to share their story with the world. Perhaps somebody out in cyberspace will find it as interesting as I did. Thank you.

It all started one fateful day,
when Sue Ellen visited a friend and
stopped at a Thrift Shop along the way.
From that day it began to transcend:
A brightly Red Fedora had
quickly caught Sue Ellen’s eye;
she thought it so beautiful and dashing:
“That Fedora I must buy!”
Inspired by a poem called: “Warning”
in later years she’d read,
a purple dressed women past 50,
who had worn that Fedora of Red.
As a present for her friend’s birthday,
that Fedora and poem she gave.
“I will give this same gift to another!”
Linda Murphy exclaimed and raved.
We want no obligations!
Only disorganization!
Fun and laughter’s our motivation!
That’s what gives us inspiration!
We lack rules and regulations!
We get silly, laugh, and chat!
We play dress-up at tea parties!
We’re The women in Red Hats!
