Analysis of the Famous Robert Frost Poem
Includes Mood, Tone, Poetic Devices, and Interpretation.

The famous poem, The Road Not Taken resembles the important decisions people make in life. The speaker, who may be the author, states that “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and sorry I could not travel both,” this simply means that there are two pathways, both appealing and attractive. However he can only travel down one of the two. The author mentions that he looks down both roads to a certain extent. He claims that one was better because it was “grassy and wanted wear” while the other path bended into undergrowth. However he states that both pathways were equally walked on. As the poem progresses, it clearly shows that the choice of path has become more significant. This is shown in the third stanza, “Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.” At this point of the poem, the readers would realize the importance of his choice of path, because once you take one road into your future it will be hard to turn back since one road may lead to more intersections and choices. In the last stanza,

“I shall be telling this with a sign

Somewhere ages and ages hence;

Two roads diverged in a wood and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”

When the author placed the word “sign” and “difference” in the phases, it has made it unclear whether he was grateful for his choice or if he regretted his decision.  The overall interpretation basically states that this poem is a metaphor of ones important life decisions. The theme of the poem relates to the anthology theme “Live Life with No Regrets” because it tells us about making the right decisions in life without feeling regretful. Once you’ve made your choice, it very hard to stop and return back to your original start-point. The line, “I took the one less traveled by,” shows that he went against the crowd and decided to go with what he felt was right. Some of the biggest mistakes in life are caused by peer pressure, and this poem informs us to follow our own thoughts to make the right choices.

            A poem with a strong meaning does not come without a variety of poetic terms and devices. At the beginning of the poem, an instant imagery is set in your mind, after reading the first line, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.” The reader now already has an image of the setting. Repetition of the phase “Two roads diverged” also occurs in the first stanza and the last. The repetition of that phase indicates the significant of the two choices and emphasis the importance of the decision.  Alliteration is found in the third line of the second stanza, “wanted wear.”  The Rhyme Scheme is abacb for each stanza. Symbols found in the poems represent the elements of life. For example, ages and ages hence, represent the future.
