The Salt March.
Mahatma Gandhi led hundreds of men on a 200 mile march to the sea to make their own salt.
On the 12th May as Mahatma Gandhi promised, he started his 200 mile journey towards the Dharasana Sea. The walk, symbolise his courage to wanting the salt tax to stop. Early in the morning Mahatma Gandhi set off with his followers behind him supporting him all the way. His followers stood his route towards the Dharasana Sea. As Mahatma Gandhi started his journey his followers thrown pretty flowers and shouted out “long live Gandhigi.” His long journey down to the sea took 23 tiring day. Every day the followers behind him got bigger.
When Mahatma Gandhi arrived at the
seaside his followers crowded round him as he
bravely made salt from the sea water. English Police were on sight watching him. As soon as he made the salt Gandhi shouted to everyone “this is Indian salt from the Indian sea, let every Indian claim it.” Then the Indian followers started to make their own salt. This message was then passed on to the Head Constable he said to arrest anyone who makes the salt. So when the Indians made their own salt they got arrested. But they didn’t arrest Mahatma Gandhi. They only arrested to him and his family when he said he was going to raid the Dharasana salt work.
On the 21st May Nehal Patel lead Mahatma Gandhi followers to Dharasana salt work. In front of the gate there were police
guarding the entrance. The leader got threatened by the police force, they arrested his family in order for him to stop, but he still carried on. The followers stood looking at the police then suddenly they attacked with their horses. The defend less Indians laid down while the horses bombarded them. After the horses went the Indians stood up. Each line walked towards the police but then they hit the Indians with sticks. The Indians were in pain and bleeding but they still didn’t use violence. There were women on sight to help the dead or the injured. Each line walked forward on got brutally injured. This raid went on and on. Mahatma Gandhi’s followers never gave up, even though they were beaten up and out numbered the.
