The scraps of life are the unfortunate among us that we forget and often condemn to a rubbish heap. Many could be found in prisons. Is it not better to reassess their condition and move those that are mentally ill into psychiatric hospitals?

How would you like

To be alone in this world

Abandoned with no one?

- – -

How would you feel

If you’re unloved

With no one

To protect you

From your nakedness?

- – -

How would you be

If you’ve

To feast on scraps

At this time of year

When there’s merriment

In the air?

- – -

There are those

That find themselves

In this predicament

Because of mental illness

Bad judgement

And unforgivable acts

- – -

These are prisoners

With bad records

That are locked away

Having wrecked

Their mind, body

And spirit

- – -

They may well be insane

We can’t reach them

And they seem

To be lost

- – -

Should we not keep trying

To reach these poor souls

Rather than throw away

The key to their cells

And saying “good riddance?”

- – -

Will their future

Not be better served

In psychiatric hospitals?

Many of these persons

Crying out for help

May very well be insane

- – -

These are questions

That state and federal officials

Should consider

Before deciding

To build more prisons

    interesting!

THEIR futures? I’m all for psychological counselling for those that are going to hit the streets again and threaten more innocents people’s ‘FUTURE’S’. The rest? I’m afraid I have better things to worry about. If that makes me a terrible person – then – I’m a terrible person!

So many people fall through the cracks of life. We are all just one tragedy away from being in this kind of predicament.

Counseling should be afforded to those who have mental illnesses, however those who have taken the lives of others should not be given special treatment. Some individuals cannot be helped; others refuse to allow help…

    Very good stuff.

A mental health assessment is something I think should be afforded to all. In my opinion, there has to be something wrong in the heads of those who would harm innocent people. I admit there are some who simply have no regard for human life. When these are weeded out, yes, they should be imprisoned.

    I like these lines
    How would you feel
    If you’re unloved
    With no one
    To protect you
    From your nakedness?

  • Angelji on Dec 19, 2011

Same thoughts with Gloomy….who would protect me from nakedness ?

There are so many sad situations just like these all over the world. Most of us wouldn’t come close to understanding. Each situation is different in some way and it really should make us think about how blessed we are in so many ways if we aren’t in such a circumstance.

It’s a must for them to think about the welfare of all prisoners.

Your words produce action my friend. Love your spirit.

I see these people’s flight so clearly since I am long been a member of prison ministry of our church. We live just so close to a National Penitentiary.

  • lovinglyoursjuny on Dec 19, 2011

    Expressive, I like it :)

Life crashes all the time and most of us are left to pick up the pieces. It is important to stand up againg and keep fighting life.

Well said. Good question and one to seriously think about.

  • sheilanewton on Dec 19, 2011

Oh, you got me to thinking about this oh so cruel world, Erwin. How expressive this poem was. The language is stunning.

We in Scotland have a Government now, that is not just talking about it, they are actually tackling the very thing you have written about, if someone has a mental health problem, or a drug problem… jail is not their answer… liked this one too cheers

I suppose we assume people in prison who require psyche couseling are getting it, but that’s probably naive. Tough situation.

  • aheed411 on Dec 20, 2011

    Wow

  • PHILLY DREAMER on Dec 20, 2011

Some people are beyond redemption. It’s hard to tell the difference between people who can be saved and those who can’t, until we can truly see into somones soul I’m afraid we have to keep them locked up.

  • J M Lennox on Dec 21, 2011

I’ve often thought how difficult it must be for even sane prisoners to mend their ways when put in an environment with others with the same problems. How hard it must be for those that mental problems. Thought provoking.

Excellent work, I agree with you. It reminds me of a similar poem that I wrote called “Prison Time” please check it out. http://authspot.com/poetry/prison-time/
