A four part Haiku.

Deep sea creatures swim

Never knowing we are here

Existing apart

Worlds unknown to us

Cold dark sea,  home to many

Life beyond our own.

Careless in our haste

Spilling poison in the sea

Killing precious life

Mother of all life

Forgive us our foolishness

blessed is the sea

Scuba diving,marine biology

well the picture is just outstanding …i would love to be a octopus or just a shrimp…people just dont get it..the sea can be our last resort…

  • Denise Kawaii on Apr 12, 2009

It is difficult for many to understand that our actions have an impact even beyond our line of sight (so to speak). The deepest oceans, highest peaks and lowest valleys are all impacted by our negligence. Great piece!

Hi, FJ…. I wonder if you realize that these are senryu, not haiku? For more on that you can check out Adam Sears’ article on the haiku. Nice works though! I like the picture, but you could have done the senryu here without it. Thanks for this and have a good one.

  • Luderhow on Apr 18, 2009

when did haikus grow longer than 3 lines? turtles shouldn’t just lie around and take the pollution we give them, they should wage war against humanity!

  • Ignatius Reilly on Apr 18, 2009

Your haiku is an atrocity and violates all laws of taste and decency. It appears Fortuna has not looked lightly upon you as she has me. You are the reason America is degenerating. A firm rule must be imposed upon our nation before it destroys itself. The United States needs some theology and geometry, some taste and decency. I suspect that we are teetering on the edge of the abyss.

  • Annie Hintsala on Apr 19, 2009

Wow. I just read your poem, and then I read the comments. Damn, Sam, the guy REALLY hates you! No wonder you’re so popular :) Sorry it took so long to read it, good picture with it. Haiku are wicked hard and just making an attempt is pretty ballsy, but you did just fine. :) Even if it is in three parts :)

  • john the babtist on Apr 19, 2009

IGGY ,YOU ARE A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU JUST SAID ABOUT THE AUTHOR.Let those without sin cast the first stone.Great job FJ.

  • Adam Henry Sears on Apr 21, 2009

These are good, but they are not haiku, they are senryu!
Check out my article to see the difference:

  • F J McCarthy on Apr 22, 2009

Thank you my Friends for your wonderful comments, you arethe reason that I continue to write, and why I wish to grow and improve as a writer.
Adam thank you, I did not know the difference between Haiku and Senryu, I value your input, for I am still, and always shall be, learning to write.
    Thank you all

I really enjoyed this and totally agreed with its meaning. Gives us all food for thought.

  • A.L.Smith on Apr 24, 2009

Love the sea therefore love the poem

  • Joni Keith on Apr 25, 2009

I’m with you Frank on so many levels. As poets here on Triond, I thought we were all supposed to be growing and learning in our writing.

The thing I love about Triond is that we can receive reviews and criticism from our peers, but some are a bit too harsh. I for one totally enjoyed this piece, be it haiku or senyru. What a beautiful photo as well. Such an important and relevant topic to write about.

  • cafoli on Apr 25, 2009

The sea is life and life!
    Care of him!
What we would be without the sea?
He feeds us, he gives us abundant rains that our land and water that fill the rivers. Gives a beautiful color to our skin in time for holiday. Finally he takes care of us. What would we without it?

  • Evelyn M Carter on Apr 26, 2009

I liked the line “worlds unknown to us.” We never really know everything that is underwater. There are probably thousands if not millions of fish and sea creatures we’ve yet to discover.

We all need to wake up and realize we are not the only living beings living here

  • Rod Ferrandino on May 28, 2009

great images of the vast unknown. FYI, in reading through the comments, Ignatius Reilly certainly stands out, but I think someone is just having some fun with you, or may be cryptically praising you. Ignatius Reilly is a character in one of my favorite novels of all time, a book written by John Kennedy Toole, and I recognize the prose. It was actually a great satire penned by a tortured author, and was published in 1980, 11 years after his suicide.

  • Rod Ferrandino on May 28, 2009

Ah, yes, the book is titled “A Confederacy of Dunces”

  • quin208 on May 31, 2009

This is a lovely poem. It’s so sad that because of some people’s selfish interests, they ruin mother nature.

  • Pyerse Dandridge on Jun 22, 2009

What interests me the most is that you used four haiku as a poem. I think the formating is very interesting.

  • chandreyee on Jun 22, 2009

lovely work..you are absolutely right..humans often forget in their quest of knowledge of all things in the world they are unknowingly hurting mother nature.

  • Debra Cornelius on Jul 11, 2009

Beautiful! Love anything having to do with the sea and this captures it wonderfully!

  • REPuckett on Jul 11, 2009

How does continue to show up on the Hot Content list? I’m sorry FJ, I’m not saying this because I know you hate for who knows why, but this is something a sixth grader could have written in less than five minutes. I’ll not conform to everyone above that leaves an insincere comment on this for the sake of maintaining rapport or the hope of reciprocation of views. I’ll answer the question above myself. This continually makes it on the Hot Content because the system flawed. I would duggest that you could write a haiku about pickles and you marketing strategy, which may or may not be ethically driven, would determine the level of traffic you generate, not quality writing. You, my friend, fall into the category of a terrible writer, but a good promoter. Congratulations on compromising the inegrity of the Triond writing community and SHAME on everyone above that indulges!!

  • BradONeill on Jul 12, 2009

4 sienryu’s strung together is not completely without merit especially with it also being a single complete poem in itself. Although I am not enthralled with the subject matter I think Repucket is a little out of line attacking this poem so ferociously. Obviously most people here enjoyed this poem enough to comment on it and that says all that needs to be said about a poem. If it connects with the audience I would call it a success. Good Job FJ.

  • Atikin on Jul 12, 2009

Contraty to REPucket’s views, I love your thoughts and the way you choose to express yourself. It is a very simple thing you’ve picked up on, like the sea, and instead of expressing it as this magical source of life, you’ve done a different take on it. I like it!

  • Ladybugblue on Jul 12, 2009

    Great thoughts and awesome picture!

  • F J McCarthy on Jul 12, 2009

To all my friends-Thank you for all of your comments,I have been taking a break from writing but you have reminded me of the reason I write. The fact that you have read something of mine and found some enjoyment from that reading give me great joy.

To The few who do not like my work for whatever reason,I hope you will continue to search for something that does give you joy.

We are only on this earth for a brief time, and I will spend that time trying to find the beauty and love in life.

Thank you all, Your humble poet F J McCarthy, aka Sport160 on Stumbleupon.

  • HarveyPenn on Jul 13, 2009

I have always been quite intrigued by how separated we are from that of our sea brethren. It is no surprise then how we can easily just overlook the devastation we are causing. Thanks for your efforts FJ.

  • theresacall on Jul 13, 2009

  • Walter Spearheart on Jul 14, 2009

True beauty lies in simplicity. This is a very simple piece – very beautiful indeed!

  • gaffneygirl on Jul 16, 2009

    In regard to REPuckett’s comment,
I bet he secretly clicked “I liked it”.

  • Abdella on Jul 16, 2009

I thought it was a good poem, but I too am confused, how popular it is. I have been trying to get on the hot content list and have plenty of poems similar to this. They barely get any views.
I’m just surprised by how much people like this one, but regardless you did a great job making this, and an even greater job promoting it.

  • Grace Kathryn on Jul 16, 2009
