An old flame flickers, then goes out.

What say we take a walk down by the river
And skip some stones the way we used to do.
Or maybe get barefooted and go wading.
We’ll have some fun and laugh till we turn blue.

Or how about we go on to the mill pond–
Take off our clothes and go in for a swim.
Remember when you thought a snake had got you
When it was me tickling you with a limb?

We could go see the bats in Miller’s coal mine.
Nobody’s been in there for several years.
We’d go there when you needed consolation.
I was always there to dry away your tears.

I can’t believe it’s been ten years this summer
Since last I saw your face or heard your voice.
You know you broke my heart the day you told me
That it was hard but you had made your choice.

That’s water ‘neath the bridge and I’m O.K. now.
How’s the family?  Are the kids O.K.?
I’m glad I got to see you–I think of you a lot.
Stop by again next time you’re out this way.

Sometimes it happens. Loved ones acquired and repossessed. Nice poetry, it reminds me of Bonnie Tyler singing “love songs don’t leave you, lovers often do”. The voice maybe harsh but definitely true.

    Beautiful, sentimental poem.

Loved the poem. The only water I’ve ever entered naked was the bathtub. I don’t know that I would be willing to go beyond that or not.

Ken, When you are our age you have a lot of memories. Some good, some bad,and some we wouldn’t take a million for.
