Beware the befriender…

The social spider
Scours the web for flies
Wraps them in silver skeins
Of feigned friendship
Lies
In waiting
Collecting wings
To lift the ego
High

It sings so songful
Tokens full of praise
For reciprocation
Invocation
Preys
Upon our
Gentle nature
And our well-mannered
Ways

Poor insecure friend
Finds comfort in sum
Numerous additions
Divisions of
One
Mortal soul
Within the web
Which the spider has
Spun

But they’ll catch spiders
By cons of disguise
A cannibalistic
Arachnid heart
Dies
Till cob-webbed
And nets won’t work
When the attraction
Dries

Beware befrienders
Who self aggrandise
By seeking followship
And worshipful
Ties
Are bound not
To friendly binds
But to a ranking’s
Rise

I loved how you ended this one. And- To lift the ego, that is what it is all about for such ’spiders’, is it not? Nothing else really matters. ‘Preys Upon our Gentle nature’ – happened to me today. Took me an entire day to get over it and now I have decided to kiss the spider goodbye. Thanks for this. You have captured the exact essence of such people.

What a beautifully constructed and well written poem about a current, somewhat trivial, tempest. To my mind you have made the best statement about this question and, at the same time, demonstrated the quality of writing that brought me to this site in the first place.

Another really great poem. It is wonderful to have friends but more important to follow your own values and not be dragged into theirs.

Kinda has a ‘rap’ feel to it. Great rhythm and rhyme. Spoken word? This is one that I had to read aloud to get the fullest impact. It’s not one of those you read silently…it has teeth! Liked it muchly. Peace, Rhonda
