A story about a man on a ship who hears a voice that leads him on an incredible journey.

The Soul – Susan Varo 10/26/08

A voice called from Heaven

A voice filled with love

A man on a ship

Heard the voice from above

He thought it came for the ocean

But his shipmate at the helm

Says it’s not from these waters

But from an ethereal realm

He followed the voice

Until he reached land

To a much startled crew

Who did not understand

The passengers on board

Out of mind out of sight

To the man and his shipmate

Who moved through the night

Their uncharted course

took them well underway

to the meaning of life

from which they had strayed

Once docked at the shore

The voice called to the people

There was nothing in sight

Just a church with no steeple

There were many onboard

Some afraid of the sight

where had they gone

on this dark quiet night

They stood side by side

alone on the shore

although many were they

still alone many more

Faces awash with uncertainty

Some knelt on one knee

Some felt it was coming

Like a rough raging sea

The voice called a man

Who walked through the crowd

And too afraid to answer

He just gasped out loud

He wanted to hide

And he wanted to run

Surrounded by water

Hours from the sun

The voice told the man

In here you will search

For the voice he now heard

Was inside the church

He went in very slowly

Others followed him inside

The view was spectacular

Both far and wide

As you are inside

So inside you will see

Where others have gone

In there search for me

The man felt unsettled

But he felt it was right

And soon was engulfed

By an unearthly light

Everything then changed

He could see all the earth

And all that it meant

And all of its worth

Another man entered

And he thought I know you

He thought about scripture

The king of the Jews

A second man entered

Not of faith but of doubt

He could not see the man

Hence the voice had called out

He could not see before him

Like the other man could

Just surrounded by darkness

Except where he stood

So the two men stood silent

But the other who must

Tell the one that is faithful

It is because of his trust

That he sees what’s before him

And not what’s just there

For those brief moments on earth

Are an eternity here

But the unfaithful man

says he’s had only but tears

I feel like I’ve suffered

For one thousand years

He then turned around

As if to leave

But his former self

Stood there and believed

All those onboard

Entered this sacred site

Where they had been spirited

On this dark quite night

Each had experiences

Unique all their own

And they all learned

They are never alone

Despite their religions

Their faiths and their races

The various colors

On their awestricken faces

All came to know

About life on this day

And will never forget

As they go on their way

When they all headed back

they saw what they knew

were their old former selves

On the ship with the crew

They man who had entered

Would soon disappear

And would not be found

Within the church anywhere

A voice called from heaven

To a man on a ship

Along with the passengers

The soul took a trip
