And you thought squirrels couldn’t talk. (photo by the author taken on my friend’s deck. He has squirrel nuts…I don’t.)

Hey, you with the camera, where’s the other old man–
The one with the peanuts in the big coffee can?
I’ve come all the way from the top of that oak
To risk life and limb and you know it’s no joke.
I see that old cat basking there in the sun.
When he chases me it’s not just for fun.
All that I want is a  peanut or two–
Just enough to help see me through.
So tell that old coot with the big peanut stash
To hustle on out here quick as a flash
Then I’ll take what’s mine and be on my way
And you, with the camera–have a nice day.

Very nice picture. Recently I have become very attached to a pack of street dogs who follow me everywhere. One of these days I’ll write about it.

That is a really cute poem. I’ve never seen a squirrel. Hmmm, wonder what my cats would make of him.

I reared two baby squirrels when they fell out of their nest in our local park, they were so cute, when they got too big to keep I took them to the R.S.P.C.A. who promptly put them to sleep! one of my first lessons in life \”Because some one wears a uniform and a hat dosen\’t mean their nice!\” Good post Ken-ster. I just love it, Ken. I feed the squirrels in our backyard my parrots day old seed, fruits and veggies plus anything I peel. We have the fattest squirrels. The only thing that keeps then from knocking on my back door are the dogs and their sharp teeth.

The first poem-crafting squirrel I knew who even dared to pose for a shot…Send my greetings to the squirrel, Ken, tell him he has what it takes to be nutty far nutty than the nutty professor.

  • wendym on Jan 19, 2010

The squirrels in our back garden are not nearly so interesting or poetic. Charming poem.

  • Ruby Hawk on Jan 19, 2010

LOL, Ken I like your poem. Squirrels sleep in my planter on the deck. I find their little rounded out nests every morning. I don\\\’t know why they bother when we have so many trees for them to nest in. Maybe it\\\’s warmer in a flower pot.
