This is a poem that I wrote for someone who wanted to say something to her son on her wedding day. She was not marrying the boys father, but the man she was marrying was like a father to him because he had been in their lives since the little boy was young. I did not know this lady. A mutual friend of ours reached out to me after she shared a poem or two with the new bride.

The moment I held you in my arms…the rain that filled my heart had dried away

And the first time you smiled at me…I was surrounded by sun filled days

And when you laugh as only you do…my world it fills with joy

From the first step you took until now…you are becoming my little big boy

Every moment I think of you…my whole heart joyfully smiles

And when I leave you for just a moment…getting composed takes me awhile

Because although I know that day will come…when you will finally be on your own

I want to cherish every moment…every precious moment as you grow

No matter where our roads may take us…together always we shall roam

Everywhere our roots should plants us…together we will call it home

There are no words to describe…what you truly mean to me

Just know that I will always love you…and that the world will see

The first day that I met you…I thought a challenge my way would come

For I was not your father…and you were not my son

But as the days went on…the closer we two had become

And every moment we spent together…to others we appeared as one

For you have surely complete me…our hearts beat together in song

Although in the beginning we did not know it…we were always father and son

And I know that soon time will pass…when you will finally be on your own

So I want to cherish every moment…every precious moment as you grow

No matter where our roads may take us…together always we shall roam

Everywhere our roots should plants us…together we will call it home

The love we have for you…to describe, no one word can

Just know we will always love you…as we walk hand, in hand, in hand.
