A poem about unrequited love…
a teenager’s first crush…
originally written in 1987.
The time has come to say goodbye
Why must we play this game?
A tear will shed, we’ll share a cry,
To hear one another’s name.
My heart will stop when I think of you,
Each night as I lie in bed,
My life will near the end of time,
As I remember each word we said.
Though I hate to leave a part of me,
My friend for all these years,
I feel a need to lead my own life,
Because I’ve cried a million tears.
I love you, dear, I always will,
My kingdom I’d give for you,
But the dreams we share could never agree,
When you don’t feel the way I do.
Though a separate life we’ll be living in,
You’ll always be in my heart.
Though a different feeling towards each other,
You’re still with me when we’re apart.
My goodbye, my friend, is not forever,
and it’s not to leave your side.
Goodbye to the dream I’ve shared my self.
Goodbye to this long-lived ride.
As I go my way, wish me luck,
And happiness, hope I’ll find.
If another one, I do choose,
Understand and do not mind.
I do not want to say goodbye,
I’ll miss you more than life.
I’ve dreamed of being held by you,
I’ve dreamed of being man and wife.
For years I’ve lived my life in a dream,
Blocking all reality.
It’s time I come to follow my head
and see what we cannot be.
You’ll never love me, I’ve realized,
You’ll never want me as I do you.
You’ll never be the one I want you to be,
(one who loves me too).
The time has come to say goodbye,
I hope you understand,
And though you may not feel the pain,
Imagine it, if you can…
