An artist needs to return to his work.

The need to create
the desire to make
some how is still there.

The sleeping giant,
the dormant dragon
who’s scales might be tarnished.

Hibernation takes its toll
Entropy and atrophy may
well give way to apathy.

The sculptor must
shake the dust from his sleepy eyes.
He scolds himself
angry at his own selfishness.
Too long has he waited
Too long has he baited
the procrastinating beast
forgetting his craft.

The muses should have left -
the gods who granted this faculty
would be justified to abandon their charge
Since birth, the holistic and terrible gods
have streamed their blessings on him.
But demons spat and cursed him
hailed ire and desperate revulsion
upon his able existence.

Mortals merely didn’t understand him.
He grew keeping his own company
Brothers – he had many –
ignored him for he baffled them.

Never was he angry
lonely eyes
but never angry
while other children played their games
their football, their tag
their kick-the-can.

He stayed dreaming on his bench.
Left alone with his paints he would compose
the world as he saw fit.
Wondering what it would be to be a god.

Landscapes breathed into existence
by magnificent strokes of his brush.
Earth of purple and sky of green
and sunsets of autumn blue.
Towering mountains miles high
with waterfalls of crimson.

“It’s eating me alive”
His thoughts interrupt his reverie.
The burning, raging desire.
His mind can not function
daily duty.
for his waking dreams
control his every actions.

He is no longer content
to be the clerk
But contented sounds so tame
as if it were satiation
with the morning breakfast.

No. He is no longer content
as if set for revolution.
Obsession with finding
his means
his mode.

“How do I start?
How do I begin again”

“What if I’ve lost it?
Lost the capacity
the spark of veracity
and everlasting tenacity
that once created.”
Pity the creature that
doubts its own calling.

The baker must be patient
whilst the yeast does its bid.
But the rising must not be in vain.
there is purpose for the waiting.

It is time to
take up the chisel
and hammer
and become the master again.
