A short poem about a place made famous in song written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1967. "Rocky Top" is played at all U. of Tenn. home football games and is mistakely thought to be the teams’ fight song. The couple was better known for writting 12 hits for the Everly Brothers including two that reached number one on the Billboard charts: "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream."

Rocky Top is not only a place,it’s a state of mind.
From the rugged Applachian Trail is where you’ll find
This spot of desolate beauty aptly described in song
On the peak of Thunderhead Mountain standing strong.

“Rocky Top” was written with a married couple’s pen
On a tour bus years ago in minutes less than ten.
So famous it became–folks sang it for so long
That Tennessee claimed it as its own state song.

The bluegrass number tells about a wild mountain lass
And bootleggers running moonshine through the pass.
But most of all to the composers who were forced to roam
The song conjured up memories of their beloved mountain home.

I love “Rocky Top” always have, always will. It conjures up a way of life long past but I lived it. Not quite on Rocky Top but near enough in spirit.
