A brief free-verse poem in praise of small towns.

Visitors are refreshed
by what we take for granted
Small shops hawk their wares
in defiance of sprawling malls.
Owners and clerks know their customers
by name.
No one is overlooked
or asked to take a number.
Sometimes progress is best achieved
by staying the same.
