This poem is about how pretense has become a part of everyday life and how "what you see is what you get" no longer exists.
Careless mirth, genuine smiles, forgotten
This world of ours has grown too rotten
Loyal friends, selfless acts, unheard of
Complex characters to top it all off
If only what we said was what we meant
If only we were true to each sentiment
If only we had just one side to our personality
If only we could recognize the cruel reality
Living out a life of pretension
Ideals suffering from false apprehension
Thoughts conveyed after paranoid speculation
In an unending quest of materialistic perfection
Am I also featured in this quest
Or am I different from the rest
Am I on the greener side of the lawn
Or am i waiting for the realization to dawn
Sacrificing, compromising
Empathising, sympathising
Flying high, sinking low
Rivers of tears flow
Is that all there is to life? Or
Is there a better tomorrow to live for
Our morals place high up on a shelf
Are we ever going to stop lying to ourselves
Shallow laughs, baseless grins
Another day, another sin
Yearning, learning
Giving up, giving in
