A description of aging, looking back on one’s life in contemplation. The old man "sitting at his windowsill" is also a symbol of contemplation and reflection of the character. There is also a definite and deliberate connection to nature, as there is reference to autumn.

His face is filled with many creases

His eyes an empty stare

With reminders of a faded youth

And a future mute and bare

He sits before his windowsill

Listening to the wind

And the rustling of the swaying trees

Then hears a bird take wing

Lines cut deep across his aged face

Like those of wrinkled leaves

His dreams have all but blown away

By the cold of autumn breeze
