Wheels have always been a part of my life and will continue to be so, until I die.
Wheels!
Those circular disks
That have central hubs
Capable of rotating
And bearing loads
Have been with me
Since I was born
- – -
On a bed in the delivery room
These wheels have supported
The mattress
And frame
On which my mother
Gave birth to me
Making it easy for the bed
To be rolled
And moved smoothly
In all directions in the room
- – -
The same thing is true
Of my rolling crib
And later ricycle
That I enjoyed learning
To ride as a child
- – -
Mastering it I graduated
To a bicycle after my balance
Became better
When I was much older
- – -
Since I lived on a cul-de-sac
My parents bought me
A battery operated scooter
That I fully enjoyed
Steering up and down the street
- – -
In high school
I was trusted with a moped
For which I had to use a helmet
That was a hit around my friends
And later went on
To inherit Granny’s old Ford
With four wheels
After she couldn’t drive any longer
- – -
I went through college with my Ford
When I started a job as a reporter
I bought a SUV
Travelled on buses, trucks
Subways and chased ambulances
All pursuing quickly on my wheels

To cover stories
- – -
I know that as I grow older
I may have to be on gurneys
At hospitals
May have to use a power chair
To get around
Or a simple wheel chair
- – -
When I die
If I’m not cremated
I expect my body
Will be wheeled
Into church on a gurney
That will support my casket
